I want to like this more than I do. I love the black and white and it's compelling but the composition is a tad off with the boat too high up in the shot for me. The waves at the bottom pull me in that direction and the boat so highly placed makes it compete for attention. It's wide but doesn't lead me into the wideness. Visually I get pulled down instead of out to the expanse.

Beautiful capture. High marks from me.

@laura young
thanks for your feedback.
the main subject here is not the boat :-)

I must say that I am not understanding this theme at all. I think I might just sit back and "learn."
VernonTrent said 337 days ago:
@ana
wide angle is not a panoramic view from left to right. it is more about the lens you use to capture a subject.
here are some links which explains the whole thing (with pics for comparison)

and here something to play with, to see the difference :-)

Thank you for the links and the info.
That canon site was cool and educational!
I'll still have to sit back and watch this time, I tried to post an 18mm, and it wasn't fitting, according to the people that rated it.
I don't have the proper lens for this theme.
VernonTrent said 337 days ago:
my submissions for this theme are taken at 17mm. the canon kit lens has 18mm. with the right perspective choice you could get a good result.
these here are taken with the 10mm lens

Trent, thanks for all the links! Weekly shot is absolutely what I have been craving for just this very reason. Education, and generously shared!
And, I do realize the boat was not the main subject, but it made my eye compete with where it wanted to look just the same. I'll have a discussion with my eyes about it. : )
Don't get me wrong, it's a lovely shot as everyone is attesting to.
I'll miss you all next week. Off to Utah. Hope to come back with something good to show you all.

thanks everyone for your feedback and the feature. :-)

Cool shot Vernon. The ship is slightly relegated but this is made up for by the pleasing waves to the foreground. Wide angle pushes stuff away, that ship must have been a monster...

Do you use a 18% Gray Card before you shoot?
VernonTrent said 333 days ago:
@tedi17
no, I shoot in raw and do the adjustments then.
why are you asking?
Tedi17 said 332 days ago:
i only asked because your pictures always have the right lighting. i'm in a photography class and my instructor suggest that we use one. however, i haven't found anyone that does. i was just wondering.
VernonTrent said 332 days ago:
hold your open hand up so it's facing the light, take a metering off your palm, open up one stop, and shoot. in 99% of the cases this works very fine. different skin tones rarely account for even a full-stop difference, try it out.
cheers

Great black and shot although it doesn't necessarily feel "wide"
