Wow...now that look really tells a story

George said 524 days ago:

Interesting choice. I'm really curious to hear what to you was interesting about this shot in terms of the theme. I have to say it doesn't speak to me.

martylavender said 524 days ago:

I chose this picture due the sheer look on her face. It may help more if you knew her personality, but this is pure wonderment when it comes to her face. I honestly think her face is oozing with curiousity

King said 524 days ago:

Something about the way the woman is posed and standing tells me that this is a self-portrait. I'm probably wrong, of course, but the choice of composition is interesting and unusual.

Is this a story about a new piercing?

King said 524 days ago:

marty...yes, she has a very interesting face.

"So, I was sitting in the park, minding my own business, when some gypsies came up and stuck this ring through my lip."

its not a self portrait - its not about a new piercing - its as simple as trying to figure out what we were talking about while taking pictures that day

kaden
this is the kind of feedback i need. thanks to you i will be a much better photographer

marty...As soon as I rated this image and posted a comment, I read the previous comments. So no need to explain twice. However, you say "...trying to figure out what we were talking about while taking pictures that day." So was she your model? or were you out taking photos together and you decided to take one of her?

martylavender said 523 days ago:

Myself, her (Nicole), and her boyfriend Will, were all out taking pictures. Me and him have the same camera. He is quite more advanced then myself, so its interesting to take pictures of the same thing and see how mine compare to his.

I will admit a secret admiration for Nicole. She has turned out to be more of a sister to me then anything. I was randomly taking shots and this one ended up getting taken.

We were explaining something that we wanted to try later. And this is the expression she let out.

I'm sorry you don't appreciate the humor Marty. On many of the images this theme we've been filling in our own stories while we wait for the photographer to enlighten us.

I like the shallow depth of field, but I'd crop the heck out of this photo to get rid of the wasted space on the top and left. Is that better?

King said 523 days ago:

"marty, used to telling his own tall tales, takes umbrage when, out of the blue, kadenajack upstages him with an uninvited whopper."

@marty...kadenajack is referring to that kind of thing. I got it immediately. Just having fun and nothing personal.

martylavender said 523 days ago:

Its not that I dont appreciate humor....I just get really bent out of shape when it comes to humor having to do with piercings and what not. I have a few myself, and I have met with some opposition from people. So no offense taken.

I was really hoping for some positive feedback on this picture though. Or negative as well. Just something. What you guys think of it. I had really high hopes for this picture.

Lange said 523 days ago:

I like the image... it suggests she has a story about what SHE is viewing. I like the framing of the image as well. However, as with many subjects I take, your image has a flatness to it. I am in exactly the same boat and do not know how to alter my images in the way to give greater depth and impact.

martylavender said 523 days ago:

Thanks for the comments.

kadenajack said 523 days ago:

@ Lange & Marty - One cure for the flatness of which you speak is a curves adjustment in photoshop. May I refer you to the Radiant Vista, which has a bunch of great photoshop tutorials that might help you.

Hummingbird said 523 days ago:

This doesn't make me wonder what the story is so much as think maybe this would be better if she was framed differently in it.

KevinG said 521 days ago:

There is a story here. What is it that's just outside the frame has her attention?

To me, the image is a little flat and despite the nice shallow dof there isn't a lot of separation between the subject and the background. My eye drifts away from the face and her expression. You might try making the background a little darker and burning in the corners a bit. Maybe something like this.

That's my 2c anyways. Of course that's my own view and it may not be an improvement to you :)
