A plain simple shot would have been infinitely more effective.

King said 526 days ago:

@zorilla,

I thought so, too. This was an accidental double exposure--that's the story. That can happen with a Hasselblad.

But what you said wasn't witty or even funny. I give you all these compliments about how witty you are and then you leave me high and dry.

But back to your critique. It seems to be in focus...isn't that a good thing?

King said 526 days ago:

@zorilla...thanks, also, for taking the time to comment. Few do, you know.

zorilla said 526 days ago:

"That Can Happen With A Hasselblad". That's a brilliant piece of copy writing. You should sell it to them. Hasselblad could build an entire marketing campaign around something like that. Send them a portfolio with some of your work, each one titled with that slogan and cut me in for 10%.

You want wit? OK. What do you call a one-eyed dinosaur? A Doyouthinkhesaurus.

Be careful what you wish for, compadre!

King said 526 days ago:

@zorilla,
What a relief! I can put on my pyjamas and hit the sack knowing that my illusion of zorilla's wittiness is untarnished.

I can't decide if you are British or an American ex-pat living in England. I don't mean that with any ill intent. I'm just curious because your wit is so cutting/biting/cynical...very British...but you write with an American style.

So, are you a Brit?

zorilla said 526 days ago:

I'm a Brit who became an American 2 years ago. I'd been living in LA since the early 90's but returned to the UK 2 days after becoming a US citizen - my little protest. A chance to shame my President into resignation. It didn't work, but what has?

Actually I came back to open a European office for my company. I get to spend quite a bit of time in both London and LalaLand and am amused by both cultures in equal measure.

zorilla said 526 days ago:

Amused, amazed and appalled. And if that's not a Cole Porter song it damned well ought to be.

King said 526 days ago:

@zorilla...so I was kinda right on both counts. Congratulations on completing the long process of becoming a citizen.

Ah lalaland, where I grew up. I love it there. But I'm also a great fan of the UK and would vacation there long and often if I could.

I share your opinion about our President.

What business are you in?...or is that going to far? Iron Flatline also travels between Los Angeles and Europe for his business.

Brilliant lighting. Incredible combination of strength and grace - looks like a bird.

My business partner is a chinese american businessman and social butterfly/networker par excellence. We import technology from China and export culture back at them.

I haven't been there yet, but Beijing is the third branch of my own personal triad. Hopefully my first trip will be next year. We're hoping to stage China's first reggae festival - to be sponsored by Jamaica as their cultural contribution to the 2008 Olympic Games.

mtmartini said 526 days ago:

Wow, that's kind of freaky looking. Beautiful lighting but I am not sure if there is really a story to be told other than how you made this image.

King said 526 days ago:

Hi Tracy...if it made you ask who, what, when, where or why, then it fits the theme. I notice, to my chagrin, that I didn't include "how" in the theme, and my two contributions so far have been posted to inspire that question. Hmmmm. I'm a failure at my own them.

Thanks for your comments.

King said 526 days ago:

Thanks, Steve_W!

King said 526 days ago:

@zorilla...Beijing is one of my favorite cities, but I haven't been there since 1980. American Airlines, where I work, flies to Shanghai now, so I can get over there cheaply. We may be flying to Beijing in another year or two...we just missed being granted a DFW-Beijing route this year.

Good luck on the reggae festival--sounds like a terrific idea.

interesting...

Lemmingstone said 526 days ago:

Feature worthy. Very well done.

Montage said 526 days ago:

This is truly intriguing. 5s from me!

VernonTrent said 526 days ago:

since this shot decorates my office gallery, it tells me its story every day when I'm looking at it :-)

King said 525 days ago:

Folks,

I'm aware that this image is low on Relevance. I was working on a much more appropriate image, but couldn't get my home-made scanning apparatus to work properly. While fussing with it, I remembered tht I recently had the b/w negative of this image professionally scanned--it makes a *huge* difference in my opinion and thought I'd share not only the results of the scan, but the luck of the double exposure.

With 13 ratings in:

* Relevance: 3.00
* Impact: 3.38
* Composition: 3.62
* Technique: 4.00
* Quality: 4.08
* Overall: 3.616

King said 525 days ago:

Folks,

If you want to see the difference between a mediocre-quality scan from a print on this image on a flatbed scanner and a high-quality professional scan of the original negative, look here:

http://www.kingdouglas.com/weeklyshot/cisco.jpg

This image, being an accidental double exposure, was difficult to print in the darkroom. The scanned print was a 5"x7" test print (the master print is 20"x24"), created years ago before I learned so much about digital imaging from my very participation here in WeeklyShot...for which I thank all of you for your hones critiques.

I'm here to learn and it is paying off, in my opinion.

psychodudu said 524 days ago:

Although this is a classy, beautifully composed image, I simply do not see a story here...Mark, I'm guessing....

psychodudu said 524 days ago:

Touchè....what questions do you think we should be asking here then, King...lol? Interesting post after what you said on Brant's image.

King said 524 days ago:

Andrew...well you read that I see that I have failed in my own theme. Brant and I exchanged a lot of comments--to which one are you referring? Not one person has asked a single question, so far, and, if they had asked, I would have answered. Thanks for your comment.

And thanks for confusing this image for one of Mark's. I'm all puffed up now.

Also, for the ratings fans out there, I don't know what ratings Andrew, posted here, but it's clear that not paying attention to Relevance, LOL, can really hurt...just a .03 drop in the Overall rating, but a .03 swing the other direction and this would be on the cusp of being featured for qualities other than Relevance.

* Relevance: 2.86
* Impact: 3.36
* Composition: 3.64
* Technique: 4.00
* Quality: 4.07
* Overall: 3.586

psychodudu said 524 days ago:

I posted low relevance here, King, and I'll let you into a little secret here.... I was only 60/40 in favour of Mark over you, namely because of the dancer you posted in the Look Up theme. I did have one question...Why?
It's nice you react like that to being confused with Mark.

psychodudu said 524 days ago:

It is a damned beautiful image though, I've been staring at it open-mouthed for about 5 minutes now....

King said 524 days ago:

Andres...I forgot to mention earlier, the fellow in this photo is the same as this one, which I posted to tease Mark Kitaoka:

http://www.weeklyshot.org/theme/look-up/response/28/

King said 524 days ago:

...meaning Andrew, of course.

King said 524 days ago:

Andrew again...here's another case of a low-relevance image getting to the front page--just barely in this case. With 15 ratings:

* Relevance: 2.87
* Impact: 3.47
* Composition: 3.73
* Technique: 4.07
* Quality: 4.13
* Overall: 3.654

kadenajack said 524 days ago:

@ zorilla - OK, let me get this straight: you, the Brit and your partner, the Chinese American are going to put on a Jamaican reggae festival in China. All you need is some Saudis in a surf contest and a Mexican polka competition and you can cover all the world's bases. ;-) Next thing you know you're going to tell me Jamaica has a bobsled team too. You're funny man.

By the way @ King, nice picture.

VernonTrent said 524 days ago:

:-))

Magician378 said 523 days ago:

King, stop being greedy and stealing all of the stars. Gimme one!

King said 523 days ago:

You have more stars than some folks, including four in a row. I've never had four in a row! :>)

All three of my entries in this theme (which I don't seem to understand--LOL) are from my archives, so I have a certain advantage. My disadvantage is that don't usually get such high-quality scans as this.

bslomovic said 523 days ago:

Ill just add that this image, the light and movement particularly, are just stunning.
As for questions, I'd like to know what the particular assignment was? Who were you working for and who is this dancer?

eggplant said 523 days ago:

Yes, and what kind of music is he dancing to, and why did you choose to shoot in b&w?
Great shot, by the way, and I particularly like that it was a mistake double exposure. I love it when you can take your mistakes to the proverbial bank.

King said 523 days ago:

Hooray, questions! Thanks! I'm not such a theme failure after all...I've been feeling very self-conscious about this.

Thanks for the words of appreciation. This double exposure image was shot in my studio for an exhibit of dance photographs at Southern Methodist University that can be seen on my website. He's not moving to music, but we were working together to get the lines I wanted. He got prints and a head shot for his time.

http://www.kingdouglas.com/BWPortraits/pages/Cisco-Bruton.htm

Some of you may know that I was a dancer first, photographer second. As a dance photographer, it seemed to me that too much of the focus in dance photography was on the legs and feet. I decided to concentrate on the upper body in an effort to create a syllabus of dance that was independent of the lower body and the dancer's contact with the earth.

I shot in B/W because I made all the prints myself, had no facilities for printing in color, and because b/w is well-suited for the abstract qualities of design and movement I was looking for.

Two other of those images have been featured on WeeklyShot:
http://www.weeklyshot.org/theme/dramatic-light/response/132/
and
http://www.weeklyshot.org/theme/curves/response/70/

Thanks again!

bslomovic said 523 days ago:

The choice of B&W is also terrific for accentuating lines, as it does so well here. Fascinating story King, had no idea that you were a dancer. The mystique continues to grow...

Magician378 said 522 days ago:

King, not a theme failure at all. Most of, if not all, of your work gets featured. On the other hand, I'm in a bit of a slump as of late. If I can't earn a star for nice shot of half a man, it's never gonna happen, lol.

Well, keep up the great work man! Have fun over there. Oh, what part of town are you from?

King said 522 days ago:

Magician378...I have no idea why your shot isn't featured!

I live near the Swiss Avenue historical district, not far from Baylor Hospital and downtown Dallas. If you want to actually *see* where I live, go here:

http://www.kingdouglas.com/My-Neighborhood/index.htm

How about you?

King said 522 days ago:

Brant, Matt...thanks for the kind words.

Magician378 said 520 days ago:

I live in Rockwall. The funny thing is, I actually work close to where you live. I'm right up the street from Baylor Hospital, haha. Small world isn't it!?

King said 520 days ago:

You have a daunting commute, then.

Magician378 said 520 days ago:

Surprisingly, my commute is only about 30 minutes. On a bad day, it's 45 minutes. Not too bad actually. Pretty cool job. =)
