Seems like a mundane office scene. What's the story?

eggplant said 482 days ago:

Actually, not an office. This is the checkout counter of a little mom & pop Italian grocery store in my neighborhood, and this woman (the mom) is lamenting their impending shut-down due to poor sales. I realize that practically none of that is perceptible from the elements of the photo alone, but I like the environmental portrait aspect of the picture...all the stuff in the background that seemingly reveals some story.
Maybe I'll repost this one if "environmental portrait" ever comes up as a topic.

I totally do not get mom & pop store from this picture. Perhaps this has something to do with their poor sales? I don't know why, but my first thought was that this was a school principal's office.

King said 482 days ago:

Small business person? School secretary? Why the emphasis on the big wire basket in the foreground?

I wish I had some good things to say because I do appreciate all the hard work and though that goes into the photos that are posted on W.S., but this one doesn't talk to me.

@King: That's cool. Your gentlemanly reply is a great response to something that doesn't speak to you. The reason that your reply and Kadenajack's are valuable is that it leads me to realize that this photo would be perfect to accompany a feature article on this family and the trouble they find themselves in with their small store (typical underdog feature).
In other words, this photo needs a headline, sub-headline, caption, and a 1200-word story to go along with it, about how the local conglomerate is edging out the little guy. Then the basket in the foreground might make sense.
Anyway...Kade & King, I appreciate your considerations and reactions and politeness...it always pays off.

good shot ... enigmatic

Great image - you should try cropping it to get rid of the "digital" display on the left. This would make it much more timeless.

King said 482 days ago:

@zorilla...interesting detail about the digital display. However, my wife can look at a woman's clothes, nails or hairstyle and immediately spot the period, so what do we do about that? Men don't usually know anything about that stuff.

eggplant said 482 days ago:

@zorilla: that's a great suggestion. And, since I like to preserve the aspect ratio, there's some negative space room at the top of the photo that could go. Thanks.
@King: Spot the period? Oh, like the time period?
