I'd say this is how I always see an eternal flame. It's a great capture. I really like the the colour.

Now that is an effective use of selective desaturation! Nice work.

Didn't feel that unusual a perspective to me, but a gorgeously presented image.

Ana, Ibimaging & owen-b - Thanks for your comments. Glad you like it.
At 13 votes it appears that this is only slightly more popular than a snake bite. Actually, it's scoring well in everything except relevance 2.62.
I kind of understand why that is so low. Most of the featured shots this week are extremes of looking up or down or weird angles. Don't get me wrong, they are excellent and feature worthy (especially #8 - wow!) but I think there are other shots this week like this one that offer just as unusual a perspective. Everyting desaturated except the flame. Hmm, kind of unusual I guess.
Being the nerd I am, I checked the definition of perspective in my dictionary. I guess everything entered this week fits.
No big deal, hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

My real problem with this one is that I don't know what I'm looking at, and hence I don't know how unusual the perspective here is or what makes it so. I gave it the benefit of doubt and rated the relevance 5 thought.

I find it a bit underlit, but I have a suspicion that you did it on purpose to highlight the flame.

Peter,
I agree with your views on extreme v unusal perspective.

What is this scene anyways?

bioLarzen said 589 days ago:

You go:

"Everyting desaturated except the flame. Hmm, kind of unusual I guess."

Now I see how you meant it to fit the theme - and I must say it didn't make me regret giving it a fiver.

(Just a remark: I guess I would find the opposite even more unusual: everything's in color except the flame. Flames' primary feature is their color - so, "colorless" flames in a color environment might work - for me at least - even better.

Would you do me a favour? Would you make a version like this and link it in?

bioLarzen - Thanks for your comments, good rating and for taking an interest in this shot. Much appreciated.
The scene here is the eternal flame at President Kennedy's gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery. Probably photographed a million plus times a year and therefore hard to get a fresh perspective/angle etc etc so I tried to go for a totally different take on it.
That's the funny thing about Weeklyshot I guess. So many great photos (better than this I might add :)) miss out on being featured or scored better on Relevance because we don't get the photographer's intention. So i appreciate your benefit of the doubt :)

I tried your suggestion and posted it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lemmingstone/469920243/

Apart from the flame, that version is untouched. Good idea and i am sure with a bit more work it could look better. Sounds like a job for the weekend. Thanks again.

Peter,

thanks yor the info about the location and especially for taking the time and trying my idea.
Well, to me both variations work just great. That desaturated flame is giving me the creeps - exactly how i imagined :)))

How far are you from being featured? I've got some rating zombies, you know :DDD
