well, err.. the twists in the tennis net. i wanted to show enough of the court though, so that it was clear what it was. i guess there isnt enough emphasis on the net itself. i just thought there were too many images of just a single twist, or a single twisted item, that the repeating twists of the net would be interesting.
what do you mean by tonal separation?

Pete,
Re tonal separation: Pretend that this is a b/w image and that you can blow it up to about 8 x 10 feet. You want to be able to see how each strand twists around it's partner, and how that twisting pattern repeats, over and under. Here, the twist is mainly identifiable from the highlights along the upper edge, the wavey quality of the two strands and the fact that we catch on pretty quickly as to what this is. We don't see twisting so much as grok (or grasp) that a twist exists, even though we don't see it clearly.
If one of the strands was, say, yellow, and the other blue, then you wouldn't need tonal separation...the color contrast would do it for you. Can you see a yellow/blue twist in your imagination? It would really jump out at you.
Cheers,

You do well for a beginner. Just keep it up and continue to ask for critiques.

twisted, yes. a bit dark, I think.... and maybe a closer up of one of the knots.

I don't get twisted from this, although I guess the wires in the fence/net could be twisted, but it just doesn't hold my attention. It is a good attempt at something different though.

Pete, as a beginner myself, this submission is much better than what I could have done in the same conditions.

thanks m8 :D the challenge of trying to 'compete' with some of the people on here is definitely helping to improve my photography!

You need some serious tonal separation here. I grant you that the black (tennis?) net is twisted, but this shot isn't working for me. I'm willing to discuss it, but what are you getting at here?
