I'm sorry, but I just can't make out what I'm looking at. It appears a bit out of focus or perhaps too granular to allow me to pick out what it is I am supposed to see. Looks like a lunar landing site to me. (Perhaps I am just being dense or my monitor is not sharp enough).

took me a moment to see the people. very haunting. i probably would have preferred seeing this completely black and white rather than the subtle hues in the background, but that is probably just a personal preference.

Wow. It was only after I looked at this very carefully, that I realized that those are burnt bodies in the foreground. I think the shot would have been more dramatic if it had been composed more tightly (difficult I know, as you want the sky and the other shell craters to be in the shot).

@Craig: these are mummies, in the desert of Atacama, Chile. I do have a tighter shot, but I thought it was a bit too graphic... This is also why I've played around with photoshop, trying to soften it, and at the same time, give this "end of the world" feeling...
