I'm not quite sure what was done to this shot in post-process, but it really hurts my eyes, and I can't focus...like I need 3-D glasses.

I wish I could give you 3-D glasses, Carrie :)

My ponderings have the same effect on my wife :)
There's something quite distracting about their faces and his hand -- lots of sharpening?

I am not sure if I get it or not, but I do really feel captivated to look and look at this image. To me it seems to have a cartoon/animation quality to is and seems unreal. I keep trying to figure it out.

This is sort of an amusing image... though I'm not sure it's quite a "decisive" moment. I am not sure what about the moment comes together in a decisive way - the funny look on the guy's face?
Also, the quality of this image is very strange. It looks like a very poor JPG, but so it's strange that I think maybe you did this on purpose? Or maybe it's from a camera phone? Sorry, maybe you processed it this way and I'm not getting it!

Thank you very much for the responses :)
The processing has nothing to do with the theme, it's not poor JPG, neither a camera phone, just pure PS processing. I did want to create a cartoonish, slightly comical effect since the man was just about to fall asleep, like the woman. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not relevant for the theme, since I'm not sure to understant the theme completely :)

Not really seeing the decisive moment here... would be nice to see the hand holding the pen as well.

Very Norman Rockwell

I have to say that I disagree with most of the comments above. While it is obviously a PP image, I like the effect (with the possible exception of the hand which seems a bit blurred or over sharpened). My first thoughts were the same as ArneG - Norman Rockwellesque. I guess I am not a photo purist. I appreciate PP when it is done well as is the case here.

I'm not sure how relevant this is to the category, but I am sure that I find the Photoshop overeffects to be really annoying
