Please tell me how to properly take this without the blown out top portion of the sky. This was taken just before sunset at different settings and f stops without getting the blue of the sky.
Thanks! Dr J

This image suffers greatly not because of the subject matter, but because of the lack of technique and thought. Sunflowers by their very nature offer an overwhelming amount of texture, but this image does anything but capture that. The focus is soft in areas where it should be sharp. The composition shows a complete lack of thought by confusing the viewer in terms of focal point. The image is flat due to a lack of proper contrast. Overall rating 5.

David, take a look at CaptureThis' image, it is not shot against the sky which can really messes with metering. It is also really crisp with great contrast, you can almost feel it - and that is the trick to this theme.

Cropping is tight, tips of pedals right at the edge of frame, I would either go tighter or looser. I wonder what this would look like in b&w, with strong contrast?

This really has some major impact. I really love the colors. I would've tried to contain the flower within the image and I might've stooped down and photographed up more to avoid that petal in the center. All in all, a very nice image.

while this type of flower does have texture, the way it is sagging and out of the light really takes from the beauty that I know exists in these types of flowers.

Unfortunately, Capturethis set the bar very high for a texture shot of a sunflower, and I am sorry to say that this one pales in comparison.
