I like the graphic qualities, the design, the textures, the highlights and shadows, and I like the design on the sandy earth. That said, it doesn't have any emotional appeal. I think the appeal is all intellectual. It's interesting and pleasing, but it needs something else to add intrigue and human interest. High marks, though.

Asfar as I can tell, and this is what I thought it looked like, it resembles a traditional asterisk, used by the first printers. If you google/wikipedia it, I'm sure you'll find a bundle of info. Or you could just ask King....

@ King - It does have emotional value to me, because my 7 year old daughter made it! Unfortunately, we cannot explain these things in advance of posting the image, so one must rely on the imagination, and/or good nature of the onlooker! Cheers, dude, and congrats on another feature...

I like the back story. I'm sorry that I left out two words in my earlier comment, "...doesn't have any emotional appeal [to me]." Of course, emotional appeal is highly personal, e.g., a photo of an empty coffee mug of a certain type might bring tears to my eyes from reminding me of my dear father.

The starburst design reminds me of the engraving sent into space on the Pioneer spacecraft:
