This is a beautiful beginning to the theme, although it doesn't illuminate the theme as much as I would wish--it fits the theme but doesn't inspire me as to how we should proceed. Primarily this is because this photo isn't about the two yellow chairs, which are elements of an atmospheric shot that speaks more to textures, lifestyle, artifacts and architecture.
Nonetheless, high marks from me.
Ana said 255 days ago:
Did you also notice the two windows the same, and the vent with two similar openings?
And dude, this is totally a shot of the two yellow chairs. They're exactly why I stopped my car to take the photograph.

i like it :)
King said 255 days ago:
@Ana...thanks for pointing out the other "twos"--that makes this photo more fun to look at in the context of the theme.
However, that you stopped to take this photo of two yellow chairs does not cause the uninformed viewer to think that this photo is about the yellow chairs, as opposed to the broader scene, as I supposed. The chairs are largely obscured by the walkway, the railings and the shadows, and that is why I suggested that they aren't the primary subject of this complex image.
The theme is pretty broad, considering that it includes "two leaves of the same color".
Ana said 255 days ago:
well, the tiny fact that you *noticed* that there are TWO, yellow chairs...... if you hadn't noticed...... :)
on the other point, you're right...it is a broader scene..the shots I took of just the chairs weren't as interesting without the context in which they exist.

There are actually lots of doubles here so hooray for relevance. And those chairs do have some great character.

I you had 2 air conditioners, you would have 2 of everything... Great capture, may not have been possible, but a slightly higher camera position would have pushed this up even high in the ratings, IMHO.
Ana said 255 days ago:
I could have stood on the top of my car..... hee hee.
very valid point, but nope, don't think so, this was high up!
zorilla said 255 days ago:
Maybe this would have worked if it had been better cropped
Ana said 255 days ago:
why would I crop it? where? do tell!
zorilla said 255 days ago:
it's too tight on the left hand side. My eye says the symmetry is broken by the missing edge of the window arch when there's so much more wall on the right.
Ana said 255 days ago:
well, when you say 'better cropped' for me, that's better framed.
I'm pretty much an "out of the camera" kind of girl.
King said 255 days ago:
@Ana...I grok the difference between framing and cropping.
However, speaking of cropping, when I scroll this image down to where I can't see the area under the walkway, this image just sings.
Just shop talk.
zorilla said 255 days ago:
OK I get the difference, but next time I get my haircut, when she says "Your usual crop?" I'll say, "No, I think I'd like it framed"
Ana said 255 days ago:
You'll be surprised at how smart you look.
I promise.

We call those Muskoka chairs from where I'm from and they are usually found on decks or docks at a cottage. It's funny to see them on a fire escape!
Ana said 254 days ago:
Thank you Dave, you increased my horrid score by .096!!
King said 254 days ago:
@Ana...an increase of 0.96 is pretty good. If your average score with 13 ratings was 2.5 (i.e., "horrid"), Dave_Mac would have had to assigned you approximately straight 4's to increase your average by .096.
If all raters gave you what Dave_Mac gave you, this would already be featured.
Dave_Mac said 254 days ago:
:) I like this and did rate it high.
Ana said 253 days ago:
Thank you Dave. I'll have to get my 5, trained robots to come vote for it and give it all fives.
That JUST MIGHT bring it out of the 2's. :)
King said 253 days ago:
I, too, rated this highly (high enough to help it get featured), despite some argument to the contrary.
Ana said 253 days ago:
I never argued your ratings, King.
I argued that this is, in fact, a photograph of two, yellow chairs...but don't recall saying anything about your ratings!
I'm not the math wiz that you are, but I for sure, can't see how anyone could have rated this high.
lol
King said 253 days ago:
@Ana...because I work with this problem every day in survey research, it is clear to me that we have to know not only the average but the variability of ratings in order to understand them.
It's like poetry: not everyone gets it.
My hunch is that this shot has polarized ratings. Those who "get it" gave you favorable ratings and those who didn't "get it" (or who didn't take the time to savor the many pleasing elements presented here) gave you low ratings.
It's like that great scene in "As Good As It Gets," where Jack Nicholson says to Helen Hunt:
"I might be the only person on the face of the earth that knows you're the greatest woman on earth. I might be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in every single thing that you do, and how you are with Spencer, "Spence," and in every single thought that you have, and how you say what you mean, and how you almost always mean something that's all about being straight and good. I think most people miss that about you, and I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food, and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good, about me."
