I've looked at this for longer than I have time. This seems to be some kind of high capacity rheostat that's been through a fire. But there seems to be condensation all over the thing, so maybe it's a frozen over AC condenser.

Could this be a part of the original set for Frankenstein?

Anyway, it's an interesting b/w photo.
