Thanks King, I was actually standing in the shallow water, hand-holding at 300mm. It was my first time ever shooting surfers, so it was a fun experience.

Do you have IS (image stabilization) on the lens? You've done a good job of holding the camera steady, although if you look at your EXIF data (this was shot digitally?), you'll probably see that this was shot at around 1/1500 second at f4, ISO 100. How close am I?

awesome shot! very sharp! makes me wanna go jump in there.. ;) great shadow too..all 5's from me! super!

It's actually kind of a crappy lens, no IS, and the lowest aperture was 5.6, so this was taken at 300mm, 5.6, 1/3200 second, at iso400 (i assume the high iso was because I couldn't get clear images at anything lower than that at 300mm).

@JustinGaynor...so I'm exactly right, when you interpolate the ISO and maximum aperture from what I suggested. 1/3200 doesn't hurt when hand-holding a photograph. :>)

better cropping would have made this a very strong image

I'm looking for a shark. Interesting resemblance to #11.
Brilliant capture...were you in the water? or shooting from shore? My hunch is that you were on shore with tripod.
Good work!
