Is it legal to photograph your hose pipe under the new government restrictions?
Next time there's a knock on your door it could be on of Tony's sprinkler sleuths.

I am always a sucker for these kind of abstract texture shots.

Hehehe... of course it would be Jarrett, I should have known.

LOL 3.5 on relevance? Come on guys. This is a photo about the color orange. Seriously, the color IS the SUBJECT, and it is ORANGE. So I am mighty perplexed at such a low relevance rating. The other categories perhaps, but relevance? This comment is not the rsult of defensiveness......it's confusion really ;)

Mesmerizing.

This is part of a huge spool of polyethylene flex conduit used for undergrounding dry utilities (like cable TV, phone lines, and electrical lines). This stuff is about three inches in diameter, and the spool this is on was about 6 feet in diameter.
And Zorilla, I live in the USA. Our government's preferred method of spying on us is apparently to listen in on our telephone calls, use computer programs to comb through millions of our private phone records, and read our E-mails. I am not sure if they are checking up on our photoblogs yet....but let's just say that if I were to find out about that tommorow, I don't think I would be surprised at this point ;)

Great semi-abstract image, I really enjoy shots like these. The squarish cropping helps the composition by keeping the lines short. It's also a nice touch that line are slightly curving.

Commenting here after reading your email on the discussion group...
I would say that this is very relevant to the theme of orange, though I am giving it an average rating of 3, meaning it's not lower than an average response, and nor above average.
I have to say that I don't find this image especially impactful or interesting, so again I give it a 3. I think this is because of the very direct lighting. I think a warmer light (such as natural sunlight) or maybe some lighting from the side would add something to this. I don't really know how to describe it, but the lighting feels sort of documentary here.
I do like the composition though. I like the way the curved lines fit into the frame. It kind of looks like the rule of thirds applied diagonally, and it feels very well-balanced.
As for the image quality, it looks great to me!

Thanks luminouslens. I REALLY appreciate a comment like that, because now I have some idea why you rated it a certain way for each category. It is not critical to me that everybody thinks EVERYTHING I do is great. But I definitely like to know WHY people either like or dislike something.
Interestingly, this was shot in natural afternoon sunlight with no supplementary light source ;) It was shot at about 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon in August, so the sun was almost directly overhead and behind me.
There are two other shots of this same subject on my photoblog which are of parts of the spool that were at 90 degrees to this shot, and have really nice sidelighting and shadows as a result. Check them out if you are interested. I would certainly enjoy your feedback.

In a sort of random way, I just came across those shots you are talking about. I was looking at a blog that linked to you, decided to check out your photoblog from there, went to your top five, and noticed a shot with these same coils so I checked it out... and I like it a LOT better than this one. That reminded me to come back here and see if there were any more comments on this image, and here are you recommending that I look at the photo I just looked at. Funny.
Anyway, something about the light and textures in the one that in your top five is really appealing to me. Looking at this orange one, I can see now that it is actually sunlight, but yeah, I guess it's the direct lighting that isn't doing it for me in this particular image. (It's not bad, by any means, just not really grabbing me.) And I really like the composition in the one on your photoblog as well as this one.
Isn't it funny how a little light and slightly different composition can make a big difference? And this is just my opinion. I am quite sure there are others who would have the opposite reaction to these two photos.
Anyway, I don't know if I'll always say the exact what numbers I'm rating an image, but I will always try to say what I like and what I think could be improved (if anything).

This is a very imaginative and unique entry. I especially like the shading and concept. Great subtle tones.
