I like the closeup here and I really like the fairly shallow depth of field and almost vignetting from the background darkness. It's an appealing shot to me.

However... I am sorry, but I don't think I understand what Marmite is well enough to get the contrast you intend here. Please explain!

Ha! Silly me...;-) You really need to know what marmite is to get this... http://www.marmite.com/ or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marmite can give you an insight... Marmite is the ultimate savoury. Anyway, not sure what I did wrong but the version of the pic that ended up here looks quite different from the one I posted on my blog http://imagesby.me.uk/photoblog/000455.html I really need to get a workflow organised for publishing on WS!!

Those really are differently processed images! I had seen the one on your blog, but hadn't compared them directly. I also like the blog one better.

That's funny about Marmite. I assumed it was also sweet and didn't get this at all. But I did figure it was my own ignorance!

the real let down on this one is the technique. you need to think more carefully about the lighting - ie, overall the image is underexposed and lacking punch with the colour. i'm not digging the reflecting light on the surface either.
