I was just formulating (in my head) an idea about "title'"' and how most 'works of art' have the liberty of a title. I think that would be beneficial in some of these categories if we could submit two word titles to our shots. This photo didn't really need the words, though. It speaks more for itself than a lot of the other shots in the theme.

Having the text on there to describe things really kills this one for me. I'd rather have the image speak for itself.

That girl looks just like a friend of mine. But I know it's not the same person as my friend isn't tall. I think more could have been made of the interesting location and I'm not a fan of signposting the concept so obviously with text. It's different though!

The writing on the photo itself seems poorly done. Why not let the photograph speak for itself? The photograph itself is wonderful technically, but the message should be something we find not something which is told to us.

I think the background is far too distracting and would have been more impactful of a photograph (for me personally) if you had used less DOF, and maybe if they were facing the camera and you had the shorter one peering over the taller ones shoulder. Might have made it so you can see their differences a little more..and if she was wearing something more feminine.

You make your point very clearly. I would have preferred to be less guided by text. I feel like you're condescending, like somehow I won't get the point if you don't walk me through this.

You left out that one has a long coat, and the other a short jacket.

Oh yeah, one of which has sleeves, whereas the other doesn't.

Technically, I find the off-camera flash throwing too harsh a shadow.

I don't see the opposites in this picture. Perhaps you could have included a visual clue or something in photoshop.

ArneG said 868 days ago:

Maybe I was feelin cynical whe I did this - the whole Relevance thing - I've pointed out the opposites - Seriously - what is more opposite than male/female???

My score? Relevance: 2.55

lbstone said 868 days ago:

Arne, maybe your relevance score was low because of the "taller/shorter" part of it. They kind of look the same height to me. That was kind of confusing.

Plus, it seems like you're trying to make it clear that this is a "fire exit" and there's "no parking." I think that also detracts from the relevance as well.

luminouslens said 868 days ago:

I didn't think I'd like this from the thumbnail, but I have to say that I like the text you've added. The opposites in the photo are not immediately obvious and your text makes them clear, yet doesn't seem (to be) to be overkill.

I think this might have more impact if this were shot (or cropped) as a vertical composition, focusing more (or only) on the people. As it is, I find myself looking at the background, but I don't find that it contributes to the point of the photo...

luminouslens said 868 days ago:

Sorry, that was supposed to say: "yet doesn't seem (to ME) to be overkill"

Flatline said 867 days ago:

Arne, I'm glad you did this on purpose, I had a feeling it was in response to the Relevance discussion.

I'm not a huge fan of type on top of photography. It has to be extremely subtle if it can work at all, in my opinion.

I think if the subject matter were more abstract, it also wouldn't be as jarring. Here there are people and there is also a sign with its own typography going on. Makes it tough for me.
