Maybe I am dense...but can someone explain this shot to me? What is the "opposite?" I don't even know what that white thing is in the left foreground. A man dressed as a rabbit? Sorry, I just don't get it at all.

i think i'm being a bit dense too. there's no doubt this is a good photo but i think 'opposites' would be a fairly abstract interpretation in my opinion.

Hey Forgingahead, to me it's clear that it's someone dressed in a silly outfit... Looks like a rabbit costume. And the other guy is sitting there in his buttoned up shirt reading the paper like a proper, normal, upright citizen. The stern look on his face is priceless.
I love the fact that both of them seem to be looking at each other... Interacting with each other... this ties things together and really adds to the "oppositeness" for me. I feel like they both *know* how different they are from each other.
We also have the added bonus of the word "Kill" in the headline of the paper. Makes me wonder if that's what the guy is thinking: "Kill da wabbit."
I can see how some people might not be into this kind of thing, but it really resonates with me. Glad to see it featured.

Well, I rated but didn't comment until now. I like the image, but also didn't "get" the opposites. I thought the hooded guy might, or might not, be wearing a klan mask - which I would consider pretty strong opposites. But the disconcerned faces in the background struck me as disconnected from the captured event. It's a great picture, I just don't understand how it is considered "opposites."

I don't think it's a rabbit at all...not sure what it is, but the guy isn't looking at the other guy unless his neck is really like the exorcist and can spin all the way around, because his chest and shoulders are straight and actually slightly turned away from the guy with the paper.

Oops...Forgot to mention that I think it's a great shot, don't get the opposite factor, but it's a great shot regardless.

Great capture.
I think the opposite theme is on the mark in a variety of places in this photograph. If you look at the couple behind the main subjects, those two are both looking out in deep reflection. On the other hand, the African American gentleman and the costumed individual are both engaged (and seemingly mocking each other) and are interacting even tho they probably really don't want anything to do with each other. One group probably knows each other and the other are just anonymous commuters. The groups are divided by a line from the seats. Another possible opposite is that one is serious and probably on his way to work, the other, maybe on his way to a party or an event. Yet another opposite is the fact that the man is African American and the other is wearing a white or light hood/costume.

Well after reading all of these explanations I am none the wiser. It is a nice picture of an interesting situation, but if you have to dig so deeply to find opposites, it really does not seem to have achieved the goal of the theme very well in my opinion.

I must agree with forgingahead, you could theorise endlessly and find relevance to such an abstract theme in virtually any photo, yet, although I love the shot, this DEFINITELY does not scream 'opposites' at me.

There's something intangibly provacative about this shot. That's definitely not a rabbit mask. I believe that what people are seeing is the man's reflection behind him, making his "double" look like rabbit ears. My first inclination is that the man is actually wearing a white hood that is drooping forward over his face. If that's the case, the question of "opposites" should be answered right there. I could be wrong in my interpretation, but that's what I'm seeing and I think it's quite a wonderful shot.

thanks for the comments all.
Just to set the record straight, it is in fact a guy wearing a rabbits hood (his face was exposed) you can make out the shape of his nose through his drooping left ear and they were looking at each other.
Either way, it's my interpretation of the theme and thanks again for looking.

I really like this picture, it's true that the opposites theme is not clear at the first sight, but I don't think every picture has to scream its them, subtleness is a plus. Am I the only one to find it very funny?

It made me laugh. :)

It gave me a chuckle. The guy with the paper has a classic look on his face. Probably very much like the kind of look I would give when faced with someone in a rabbit mask on the subway, of course you meet all kinds in the subway.
