I was a bit torn on this at first.

While I think you nailed the theme and the message is very clear, i'm not a fan of photos that have been overly proccessed.

It seems to have a bit of a desaturated feel to it, and I think it makes the church in the background look like it was added in post proccess.

This is great! I probably would have cropped out the church on the left (beyond the post) but it still has great impact.

good use of perspective - it really helps this relevant juxtaposition.

this made me laugh out loud. perfect for the theme - great catch. i do wish the image were a bit more crisp however.

Nice juxtaposition of idealogies and very effective depth of focus.

Speaks opposites to me.

Very good image, two suggestions though, one would be having a bit more depth of field. And I don't know if the empty space on the right does it for me. This a a very active picture with all the different lines and the arcitecture of the church. It seems like the space on the right is a rest area for the picture, and when you have something this strong and active you don't want to allow the viewer time to rest, because without a spot for them to feel at ease the picture becomes that much more edgy and uncomfortable.

I think vertical instead of horizontal would have made this more affective for me. Because both subjects are vertical, I can't tell if you used a long lens to compress the building to the poll so it looked closer..or if it was just the way you were shooting. But I also think having more speace between the poll & the church would have made it stand out just a little bit more. One more thing is personally I find the rest of the church to the left of the poll to be obsolete and believe it could have been just as affective of a photograph, (maybe even more) if it was cropped.

It is diffently impactful.

Thanks for the comments guys, I fully take on board the compositional issues mentioned and agree with them all. If I'd have taken this shot today, I would probably have considered all of those points myself. At the time, I was stuggling with balancing the flash (for the lamppost) with the exposure of the church & the framing seemed to have been neglected a bit.

Kristin: this shot wasn't overly processed, all that I did to it was adjust the brightness as the original felt a little dark and I slightly desaturated the red sticker on the post to stop it distracting, the rest of the image is as unsaturated as this in real life!

Great relevance, good colors... I like it!

Oh, I think I just caused this photo to be featured.

Mark_Hamilton said 830 days ago:

Neil, thanks for the explanation. I contemplated my comment and (like Kristin) considered saying that the PS'd sky made me wonder if the post had been PS'd into it. I decided that was the photographer's expression and decided to not say anything- good thing because looks like I'd have been wrong. Just yesterday, I shot a picture and used fill-flash and came up with a similar (although not nearly as good) lighting effect.

Good job, it well deserves to be on the front page.
