Hey, ChriZ,
When you said you enjoyed building tents, I knew immediately what you meant, but wondered how many others may have caught on. When I saw this, my first thought was tent.
Why in the world are you going around building tents and photographing flatware?--well done, by the way. Photoshop would have made this so much easier when I was doing product photography.
High marks.
ChriZ said 524 days ago:
I guess practicing.
You never know when the next cutlery company comes knocking at your door.
About my tent, it's the only thing I have so far, I won it at a little online contest once, but I am looking forward to get some other neat stuff, at some point in time...

You won a tent? In my days :>) if one needed a tent, one built a tent--custom size and shape for whatever was being photographed.
How big is your tent? Can you sleep in it?
ChriZ said 524 days ago:
about 1m³
With those metal rings? Custom made? or just a tent with a couple of cloths?
Cause the one I have you can fold together, I think I'd have a hard time to build something like that...

wonderful detail. might have had more impact in a place setting or next to an old tea cup.

ChriZ...there are many ways to build light tents. Try taking a shot of these spoons, but looking straight down. See the black hole in the middle of the spoon? How can you get rid of the hole, or minimize it to the point that it is unnoticeable (i.e., without Photoshop or, in the old days, expensive retouching)? We built custom tents--and very refined ones--because each subject had its own lighting demands.

Folks,
Before you start thinking that I am criticizing ChriZ's lovely work here--I'm not. This is just shop talk.
ChriZ said 524 days ago:
Yea I have noticed the hole on the spoons, that's why the placement the one spoon that would actually reflect the camera is upside down, that was the fix I did.
I do have a cloth that came with the tent there's just just a little hole for the camera to peek through, but it's so annoying.
How could such a custom made tent look like? Reflectors, blankets, paper, all kind of in there mixed up?
King said 524 days ago:
ChriZ...given that "tents" are primarily built to photograph very shiny or reflective things (although some portraits look good if the model is in the tent), the tent would be made out of whatever was available that worked for the shot.
As you know, one side/section of the tent has a translucent quality (tissue paper, plexiglas, silk, etc.) through which the light is shone. That is blended into other sections that are usually white (more cloth, white cards, more plexiglas, white plastic laminate--formica--etc.). Finally, the camera and lens are hidden behind more white, blended as well with the tent as possible--no holes in the tent, please.
When I used to shoot flatware, I would first set up and refine the shot until ready for the final exposure, then I would build the tent. The tent would be built around the subject, so, with flatware, that didn't require a very large tent. I would usually have one side of plexiglas because cloth and tissue paper add a texture to the flatware that is usually undesirable.
If shooting straight down, the top of the tent would be built to taper and rise to the level of the front of the lens barrel. Last, I would very carefully cut a small, round hole in a white card that was about the size of the lens aperture I would be using to take the photo. With a view camera, it isn't too difficult to arrange the card such that it doesn't block any light. This small card would simply rest on the top of the tent, or could be taped to the lens barrel.
The same tent could be used a number of times for objects of similar size, or modified as necessary, so it was beneficial to take some pains to make a tent that could easily be collapesed and stored.

Thanks a lot for this in-depth tutorial/explanation.
I guess the more you invest in building the tent and the satisfaction level must be huge once the photo gets taken and the results are as expected.
Well, what I am also trying to do in the near future is, to take some product shots with a black background/surface. I guess I'll have to go with black glossy paper, and then just round it up, this I can then put in a light tent as well for the correct lighting.

Yeah, they must be old, but....mmm...

They sure are nice spoons, but how to tell if they re old? I'll assume so, but I won't rate relevence.
Higher than average marks elsewhere.

Totally gorgeous shot - and suitably old-looking.
ChriZ said 523 days ago:
Jason, it's not just about the spoons, it's also the old way of dining, silverware isn't very common anymore!
Thanks for all the comments.

I know its from you Chriz. The impact is for me not strong, but I like the beauty of the pic. And I think its difficult to make it bether with this object. You choose a good way to put in scene this spoons.
King said 519 days ago:
Well, surprise, surprise. Another 11th hour feature. Congratulations, ChriZ!
ChriZ said 519 days ago:
It was sitting around there waiting for another 0.04 for a while now.
Your theme's next King, this will be totally different, can't await it!

Congrats ChriZ, I really enjoyed the tent conversation between you and King, it was very informative.

pretty nice. its almost like the spoons could be floating in the air being held apart by magnetism.
