The composition does it for me, along with the subject matter. I suppose this is a combination of fire and weather damage. One could guess that this is a gothic church, about 600-800 years old, but I'm no expert. Where is this?
Well done. High marks.

This looks like a great set of ruins. I would have improved this shot by moving. The steps dominate, and they're the least interesting thing in the picture.

good photo. has a bit of lens distortion that doesn't add to the quality. besides that, i think it looks great.

Thanks for the comments. This was taken at Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire, England on a very dull and wet day. The abbey was founded in 1151 - more info at www.boltonabbey.com.
@ Ana - you're right, there are a couple of dust specs in the sky. I only noticed them after I hit the upload button. Doh!
@ King - a little older than your guess, but not bad! I don't know how the damage occurred. It probably had a lot to do with the Reformation in the 16th Century.
@ kadenjack - I did take other pictures, but the weather was pretty poor and this was my favourite from the day.
@ john - glad you like it. Personally I like a bit of wide angle distortion, but each to their own.

About wide angle distortion. It is amazing to see the distortion (so evident at 750 pixels on a side) disappear when one enlarges the image (say to about 6 feet on a side) to view the image from up close. Now get this: close one eye and you may get the strange optical illusion that you are actually on the scene, viewing it in three dimensions. I've seen it, done it. It's very impressive.

Whoops - Just to set the recored straight this is in fact Fountains Abbey, not Bolton Abbey.
Fountains was founded in 1132, so it is actually a little older than Bolton Abbey.
