I really like this. The sepia treatment works, and gives a nice retro feel which complements the styling of the car. However the illuminated sign is distracting which slighty spoils the composition for me, and could easily be retouched out. Otherwise straight 5s.

George said 632 days ago:

duncmc, Thanks for the comment! You make a good point and I was going to do just as you suggest but forgot to do so before hitting SUBMIT. Oh well. Live and learn :-)

nattfodd said 632 days ago:

Great shot, though "night" is not the first thing that comes to my mind. I especially like the composition and sepia tones.

George said 632 days ago:

nattfodd, i appreciate your honest critique. if "night" isn't the first thing that comes to mind, what is? also, does it seem to you like this was not taken at night? i'm just curious.

nattfodd said 632 days ago:

@George: I'm not so sure, probably something like "vintage" (though, not being a native speaker, I'm not totally certain that it means what I think). Or "retro", as duncmc said.

It looks like it has been shot at night, of course (and if I had any doubts about it, the sign on the left part is giving it away), but my remark came from the feeling that the night isn't the main subject of the shot, as opposed to the car or the mood. That said, it's a damn fine photo and that's all I'm asking for :)

As for the illuminated sign, I kind of like it, it breaks the "perfectness" of the composition as it is quite unexpected here.

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

High rating -- This is very cool °
(in almost every sense..)

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

...maybe because (here in France) this is the night* and I am listening to very cool (electro-rasta) music - but definitly your image - George - is a cool (night*) image ;-)
Sincerly

kadenajack said 632 days ago:

Probably could crop out the sign on the left. Otherwise, this is a refreshing take on the theme.

kadenajack said 632 days ago:

BTW, I think my grandmother had a car just like this one. Is that a Chevy 2?

George said 632 days ago:

nattfodd,

thanks for the feedback. much appreciated :-) and i'm happy to hear the sign works for you. groovy.

George said 632 days ago:

JIMJIM,

merci beacoup, mon ami! j'aime bien le reggae aussi et je suis heureuse que cet image peut faire "une moment" pour toi! et une petit chose plus: pardon pour mon francais tres mal!

now..."come on and lively up yourself and don't be no dread..."

George said 632 days ago:

kadenjack,

that sign is the thorn in my side! aarrgghhh!! nonetheless, glad you feel this has a refreshing angle :-)

as for the car...it's a cadillac, which is a general motors car if i'm not mistaken.

SeekingFocus said 632 days ago:

I really like the technique. I wish that sign wasn't in the background.

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

Merci George ; c'est bien aimable de me répondre en français ;-)
Attention cependant : if you say "je suis heureuse" then you are a girl (which I don't think you are - George) then you have to say "je suis heureux"...ah, le français, quel cauchemare !!!!
;-)

George said 632 days ago:

JIMJIM, je t'ai dis que mon francais etait mal! actually, i originally wrote "je suis heureux" and then i thought, wait a minute, is that for the plural?? anyway, i'm glad i made you laugh :-) as for "cauchemare"...qu'est-ce que c'est ca?

George said 632 days ago:

okay...i just checked it out..."cauchemar" = "nightmare"

i think english can be a pretty good cauchemar, too, no?

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

Bravo en tout cas, et ce n'était pas si mal ;-)
"cauchemare" means it's a nightmare 'cause french grammar is not an easy one and can easily provoke headaches...
;-))
no ??

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

;-)))))))))

moodeous said 632 days ago:

Interesting composition. Very unexpected and eerie. I like the strangeness of it... I kind of feel like its an old horror film still.

George said 632 days ago:

One thing about "Qu'est-ce que c'est ca?"

If you translate it word for word, I think it means "What is this that it is that?"

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

I tried Japanese which is also a good one..
BTW I hope your image will be featured !!i

George said 632 days ago:

moodeous, thanks for the comment :-) now if you'll excuse me i have to get into my boris karloff outfit... mu HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAA!!!

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

word ford yes ;-))
In fact "Qu'est ce que c'est que ça ?" = "What's that ?"
My son always says that...
;-))

George said 632 days ago:

SeekingFocus, as you can tell from my (and others') comments, I fear that sign at the very least will keep this out of the featured arena.

Signs, signs, everywhere are signs,
Breaking up the scenery, blowing my mind
"Do this," "Don't do that,"
Can't you read the signs...?

George said 632 days ago:

JIMJIM, yes yes yes! That's the funny part of it! The practical translation is "what's that" but the literal translation is "what is this that it is that"! I love languages! Each one opens a new world. I'm glad we had a chance to exchange some words this evening :-)

JIMJIM said 632 days ago:

yep, that's cool ;-)
(ici, il est 2h23 et je crois que je vais aller dormir..finalement !!)
Good Luck, I hope I 'll see your image featured "demain matin" lOl

George said 632 days ago:

et puis allez dormir, JIMJIM! a demain! thanks for the good wishes...let's see what happens :-)

philippe said 632 days ago:

Chouette!

subjektiv said 632 days ago:

Christine? ;-)

SeekingFocus said 631 days ago:

George, you made it! Nice work, my friend!

JIMJIM said 631 days ago:

Super !!!

dcreighton said 631 days ago:

I like this image. I think the image is more effective as a square crop without the illuminated sign. Different take, simple subject, well presented. Nice. Congrats.

George said 631 days ago:

yes, subjektiv. or perhaps The Car? :-)

George said 631 days ago:

@JIMJIM, merci mon ami!

@dcreighton, you're so right, and thanks for the comment :-)

King said 630 days ago:

This is the kind of car in which one goes cruisin'...at night. Looks like a 1958.
Good work, George!

George said 630 days ago:

Thank you Jason!

George said 630 days ago:

So true, King. Very much a cruiser. Thanks for the comment :-)
