I love the composition of this, but the night part seems processed.
King said 669 days ago:
Fabulous. Great composition. Nice human touch.
King said 669 days ago:
...but what do *they* know.
Anybody want to fight?
King said 669 days ago:
Mark, this should go up there with your best work, IMHO.

The shape of the light really makes something - strange and bizarre atmo...another interpretation of night..!

delightful.

The girl in the window makes the image for me. It's hard to tell if this is really at night. That light beam looks photoshopped to me, but I could be wrong and I'm still going to give high marks.

My goodness everyone. I never in a million years thought that this image would garner so much controversy. The shot was taken at night if you consider twilight night. For me, not all images need to be in the dead of night, but hey that's what makes the world go round. Two elements struck me as I looked up from Valencia Street in the Mission District of SF before I took this shot. The little girl was moving the curtains which caught my attention. And the lighting was really odd in a surreal way, perhaps because of the time of 'night' or because of the building and angle I was looking up. She's on the fourth floor of the building.
Thanks for the comments and thoughts. This theme is really producing some stunning images. King, thanks for the backup and my fighting days are over...at least for another year!

Hmmmmm...this doesn't quite look natural. This is daylight shot with shadows added to make it look like night. Nice idea though.
George said 669 days ago:
Spectacular shot. I love it. My only nitpick is the image quality of the girl's face/hair/window in general suffers a bit. But overall a very strong image to my eye and I like the fact that there's a human element!

A terrific shot Mark! I hope it gets featured :-)

To me, something seems not-quite right here....
The "light" coming off that streetlight, is not behaving naturally, like i would expect it to if theis were a single photograph of that streetlight in front of that building.
One reason I think this, is because the cone of illumination is beginning ABOVE the glass portion of the streetlamp that actually emits the light.
Also, there is no evidence of a shadow of the pole supporting the streetlight, which is between the light and the wall....and there should be, because this shot is slightly off-axis from the curved part of the streetlight.
Finally, the shadow on the left side of the windowsill detail is at a totally different angle than the shadow on the right side (45 degrees vs. 90 degrees), which could not happen if this was all illuminated by that same streetlight.
I think this was created in Photoshop. That's OK, but I think if you are going to try and do that, you need to make sure and get major details accurate (i.e. the ones humans can instincually tell are "off" if they aren't done correctly).

You gotta tell me Mark, did you "enhance" this in Photoshop? I stand by all my previous comments ;)

I love this one. The girl looking through the window is priceless. The top of the window could be a bit lighter, but this looks to be exposed about as best as possible.
George said 668 days ago:
Jarrett (gorin-images), I, too, noticed cone of light beginning above the lamp. The 45 degree on the left seems in line with the direction of illumination from the lamp, and because the right side of the sill is not bathed by the lamp it seems to be consistent in that regard. But what do I know?
Mark, what's the story here? I love the image regardless of what you may or may not have done, but I'm also curious (George) ;-)

I'm curious about this. Great creativity and impact.

I can't quite figure this one out. Is it a day shot that was photoshopped?
Flatline said 667 days ago:
Wow, what a great image.IT's not really "Night" in my mind, but you could process it slightly to give it more of a night-time sense. For one thing, this shot might work wonderfully in B&W. You could also burn in the lamp-lit area, making it a little darker, and just leaving an emphasis on the face.
Anyway, this is a pleasure to look at, I wish I had a shot like this to play around with on rainy afternoons. Well done!

Mark,
You didn't answer Jarrett's question. He's smart, isn't he? Not always right, but very smart.

I'm not convinced that this picture was actually taken at night!
