But why so much darkness in the frame? Why not crop in closer?

That resulted in some pretty cool patterns. I also think your wide-aspect ratio presentation is an interesting choice that works well.

@ luminouslens and Esspea: I much prefer the black space. Photography is ultimately subjective and I took about 100 shots of my friends Liz and Katie spinning poi, and the negative space frames the subject. Also, you need a long exposure to get the trails, and if you zoom in, the subjects get very blurry. The red also contrasts very well with the black. So, I'm sorry it doesn't sit well with your preferences, I guess, but I like presenting them as the one source of light in an otherwise very dark night.

Well done. My only complaint is that the subject feels small because of all the empty space. I would have cropped this to give the subjects more emphasis. 5's everywhere except composition.
