An intriguing shot, which is beautifully exposed.

However, I'm not sure what I'm looking at. Are those feathers? Are they floating in the air? What's the story?

Thanks, I was fearing that people wouldn't manage to find what it was. It is flowers hanging out of a balcony (I suspect wild cotton or something similar, though I'm not a botanist).

This was taken very early this morning in the streets of Paris.

What are we looking at? It is intriguing but kind of hard to judge.

Ahh - okay. I think in this instance you needed a little more light to give context to the image and make it easier to understand what it was. Either that or you needed to be totally abstract with it.

nattfodd said 591 days ago:

@uncommondepth: I tend to agree, but I think it's already quite far on the abstract side. What do you think I could change to push it even further in this direction?

As for adding more light, well... Considering it was taken at 5am in a mostly unlit street save for one public light, and without flash nor tripod, I didn't really have much choice :)

Thanks for your comments.

I have no idea what this is supposed to be. Mentally, I can't make the connection, visually I don't see what the composition is. Sorry to be so negative....

Lack of equipment can be a problem. To keep the image as is, I would liked to have seen more of the building, and perhaps the pot to know this is a plant.

To go further abstract, I would have tried to get closer (or crop). You could have then used a slightly faster shutter speed to capture more detail in the individual puffs of white cotton, while allowing some blurring in others.

Working with what you have here, I think just cropping out the building on the left would have worked better. Because we can sort of make out that's a building our brain is trying to figure out a connection between those puffs and the building. Getting rid of that connection would allow us to interpret this much differently, and allow some freedom in thought. It may not have scored any better, but I'm willing to bet the comments would be totally different.

So, to go on with technical constraints, I didn't have any other suitable lens for this shot (this was taken with a fixed 50mm, and I also had a 11-18 wide-angle and a 70-300 which was a no-no with so few light). I also couldn't see the pot since this was taken from below.

I have another series of shots with the public light almost behind the flowers, which gives a nice contrasted effect but took out too much details to my taste. I can show it to you if you're interested.

You're right about the building, and this picture will probably end that way, but it would then have been totally disconnected from the night theme. I didn't post it to get good scores, obviously (and didn't get them, everything between 2 and 3), but I believe it would almost have been dishonest to post a totally abstract image :) It's just too bad that I didn't take it for last week's theme, where it would have fitted perfectly.

Anyway, thank you for your amazing feedback!

this is lovely, whatever it is!

Literally the words that came out of my mouth when this loaded were, "What the hell?" Upon studying for a while, I still have no idea what I'm looking at. Looks like it was shot at night, so highly relevant, but beyond that I don't know how to rate this. I have a feeling the scores aren't going to mean anything if everyone else is having the same difficulty. Of course there's always the chance that I'm the only one that doesn't get the artsy shot again.

CraigMartin said 590 days ago:

I am not sure this says much about night, but that is because I am not sure what I am looking at! But it is a very dramatic and interesting shot. What are we looking at (other than a cloud of feathers against a black background)?
