wow, great

SeekingFocus said 684 days ago:

Wow. Long exposure AND lightning. Impressive.

ArneG said 684 days ago:

Amazing capture - one challenge that that I have is that the long exposures take away the look of night to me. This, to me, is more of a long exposure - lightning photo than 'night'

ChriZ said 684 days ago:

This almost has too much impact =P

luminouslens said 684 days ago:

Interesting. It's definitely eye catching, but at the same time, I feel it's a little too forced. I assume this is two photos blended together?

Ashish said 684 days ago:

Love the range of colors, great shot!

dcreighton said 684 days ago:

@ Luminouslens- one lengthy exposure. Of course this wasn't the only frame I took. But it was the only one with the right elements in the frame and in a composition that worked. The lightning was absolutely intense until I found this viewpoint and then I had to wait for several small bursts to record. Post processing included curves for contrast, removing some magenta, and noise reduction.

Great Result!

luminouslens said 684 days ago:

Wait, this is REAL?! Wow. Okay, I take back everything I said.

dcreighton said 684 days ago:

I forgot to add, and I didn't think about until I looked at the other frames, I did dodge and burn to pull out and hold detail. Feel it is important to be honest in technique.

nattfodd said 684 days ago:

Classic but very efficient!

kadenajack said 684 days ago:

Wow! Light streaks and lightning streaks all in one shot. I think I've died and gone to photographic heaven. FEATURE! FEATURE! FEATURE! All 5's.

Wint3r said 684 days ago:

Wow! Thats all I can think to say...wow!

Lemmingstone said 684 days ago:

Composition works well here, especially the curve in the distance. Great capture.

bridge said 683 days ago:

super cool.

dcreighton said 683 days ago:

Thanks all. When I took this image I wasn't satisfied. I knew that all of the subtle little lightning bolts would blend into the dots of the printing press and considering the storm that I witnessed looking for this vantage point it was very dissappointing to have been 2 minutes late. But time adds new dimension when looking at images again and so does viewing this image over the internet. Here you can see pretty much all the nuances of the image and viewed like this I enjoy the composition more myself.

@ Kadenajack (and everyone else)- Thanks very much. We will see if it features...

beckn32 said 683 days ago:

Very nice. I like both elements of the cars and the lightening filling the frame.

kadenajack said 683 days ago:

Congratulations. I'm glad this finally got the feature.

faustina said 683 days ago:

This is really great, I love it.

George said 683 days ago:

Terrific shot, Dan! I'm glad you lived to tell the tale ;-) How long was the exposure? And what about the halo-ish feel around the trees on the left? Is that city lights? Also, on the left side of the sky there appears to be some banding? Or are those clouds...or just my eyes? :P

duncmc said 683 days ago:

Very impressive! Too late to rate but would have been all the 5s.

dcreighton said 683 days ago:

@ George- I was safe in my truck on an overpass so no worries there! The exposure was 30 seconds as I didn't want to deal with bulb since I didn't have a release along. There were multiple images I took where there were no lightning strikes, or enough to make any impact, or where the car lights were too much or too little, or where a passing trailer shook the overpass causing image shake. This is the one and only frame where it came together. The halo at left is the lights of a small suburban town and likely from the HS stadium where I was supposed to photograph a game at. I did dodge the trees on the left below that halo to pull some detail out but I don't think it would have impacted that area.

As for the sky at left it does look odd at this size. It is where the lightning didn't really light the sky and while I don't see banding the transition in color saturation, while natural, looks weird because it is so sudden. I think it would have gone from blue to black if it weren't for the town lighting the gray storm clouds. The transition is smoother larger but it is still there. It's amazing how it looks so different both to my eye when I was there and also from daylight skies when lit like this from within the clouds. Next big storm like this I plan on doing more and hopefully will get to my predetermined vantage points before the storm fades like it did here.

@ ALL- Thanks very much for the comments and compliments.

Wow, most of us would be pleased with light trails! The lightening, well that's just icing, hundreds and thousands, a flake and chocolate sauce on top. The colours do it for me, the whole spectrum seems to be there...
