Woah, must be the January in me, but I assumed that was snow! And then I thought this was the strangest picture! I thought he looked sort of bored, but now I think he just looks hot and tired.

It's still a little strange to me though. Why the red toning? Or is that just the effect of almost completely desaturating this?

Also, his left leg looks strangely blurry... did you clone something out there?

Thanks to the two of you who have commented.

@Ana - I think you may have mistaken the pure white sand of Pensacola Beach for snow. It happens all the time. This was actually a very warm day. It's interesting that you actually want to see more negative space. There was plenty of sand around him, but I didn't shoot anything wider than this.

@luminouslens - You caught me in a bad clone job. This guy was in fact playing his guitar alone on the beach. When I originally processed this I was going for a negative spacey kind of thing, but there was a beach towel and a bright red cooler to his side. When I tried to eliminate that, so as to further isolate him, I couldn't seem to get rid of the red halo from the cooler especially along the edge of his leg (hence the fuzziness). So I tried completely desaturating, which made the overall composition feel flat to me. So then I colorized just the guy in that sepia-ish color for the finished product.

In looking through my archives, I'm not seeing much that applies to this theme well. I suppose this may have been a little forced. I'll be on the lookout for something to shoot this week.

Thanks for the explanation kadenajack. I think you were probably right to clone out the blanket, at least if you were going for negative space. I find the selective sepia to be a little weird though... might want to try a browner tone and apply it to the whole image?

Anyway, I do like your idea to use sand as negative space! And that is some crazy snow-sand!

I love the sand here. If you'd like to see it in a full color version check out:
