Very nice. The negative space basically creates a photo within a photo. On the one hand it's about a glass, on the other it's about a drop falling into a glass. 5's.

Wicked. A really amusing take on the theme, could perhaps have been a little sharper...

Thanks for the comments! Just a little more info on the low quality and sharpness: This was taken on 35mm film and I only have a flatbed scanner, so I had to scan the 4x6 print of it definitely not a recipe for quality!

Good idea for negative space. The placement of the glass and the emptiness above it except for the water is perfect.
I think this could be very striking with a lot more contrast.

High marks for meeting the technical demands of capturing a splashing water drop--it that is truly what this is. I don't think this was done with electronic flash. I think you ramped up your iso and shot this in daylight with the fastest shutter speed you could get your camera to muster--very fast, indeed.
Could use, IMHO, some judicious cropping.

Actually I shot this in my basement in complete dark using an electronic flash! The flash was not attached to the camera and the camera was set to B. Open the shutter, fumble in the dark to fire the flash, fumble in the dark to release the cable release. And that doesn't even include dropping the water in the dark from a straw!

like this- the drops make it.

I've seen this before. But it's well done.

Comments on technique are sometimes amusing. Even a professional can be wrong?? What do we know?

Assuming you are referring to me, and I think you are...
I'm a happy amateur. I like to guess, like anyone. The reason I didn't think this was electronic flash is because technically it isn't very high quality. My thinking was that if a hard-core, professional advertising photographer bothered to set this up in his or her studio with electronic flash, it would have much higher, shall we say, "production values."
Shane, however, is a very clever guy and pulled the wool over my ideas with his low-tech solution.

I really should take another stab at this now that I have 'instant' feedback and a better setup. :)
This shot was the last shot on the last roll of film I shot before I got my digital. I was flipping through the outtakes and getting nothing, then this last one showed up!

@King: I'm sorry, I understood you were a retired advertising photographer.
And I withdraw what I said: you cannot be wrong. ;O)

Great action shot! The soft tones, white background and the shape of the glass really do it for me.
