That is an excellent use of negative space. This makes an image of a flower, which is a totally over-photographed subject IMHO, interesting and unique, instead of yet another pretty flower picture. The contrast between dark and light is awesome too.

This is wonderful.... but would have more negative space if the greens in the background weren't there.

Nice use of metering to creative negative space. It's simple and effective.

This is great. The space really enhances the flower.

Interesting...the greens in the background weren;t present on my monitor. Then I stood up and looked down at an angle (which tends to overstate brightness on LCD screens) and I saw what you were talking about.
Froma a normal viewing angle, the background looks nearly black on my monitor. I wonder how it looks on Roberta's screen.
This is a good exemple of how monitor calibration can make a big difference in how images appear.

This is absolutely beautiful and what an excellent choice for the theme.

The green buds of the background are there on my monitor. It was a conscious decision to leave them in to give more reference to the type of plant this is. I could have just as easily cloned them out. The rest of the background is black, which made me wonder about Psychodudu's comment. I'm going to go check this on my desktop monitor.
I know I've mentioned calibration before. Both my systems are calibrated regularly with Spyder2. Though I do notice slight differences between the laptop and desktop. With the laptop, the angle makes a difference in the luminiousity of the image.

Yes...YOUR monitors are calibrated....but what about the monitors of the people who are looking at your images? ;)
I agree with your choice about leaving just those two buds under the flower slightly visible, but if someone has their brightness cranked up, they will see green stem details etc. within the areas that you intended to be black.
Personally, I like how it looks the way you intended it.

Ah yes. What to do about other people using un-calibrated monitors? I guess one takes their lumps then. I'm sure not going to use uncalibrated monitors just so those people may or may not see what I want them to. My primary concern is that when I go to print that image, the results mirror my vision for it.
Thanks for the comments and interesting discussion.

Lovely flower. Appears to be in focus. Could use, IMHO, some judicious cropping.

Beautiful and yet a bit ugly! Now, what I mean is the image is striking, but the ugliness comes in seeing some of the minute detail of the flower that is either damgaged or mangled or deformed in some way. That ugliness is made much more apparent through the use of the negative space and I applaud that effect. 5s from me all around!

Background needed to be a touch darker imho. Stunning flower in the stages og decline.
