I like this image for it's feelng and presentation of style. I don't think for me this really says negative space because to me the elements all work well throughout the space provided and therefore there really isn't any negative space left. I know there is space in front of the heron for it to move into but as a photo overall I think it has a nice visual flow and is well composed but doesn't feel like there is the abundance of negative space expected for the theme. Other then relevance this image is well done IMO.

I like this image alot, but the "negative space" aspect of it doesn't seem to be a primary feature. It looks like it was a fairly long exposure too, which produced a really interesting result.

Great shot, love love love it. But not fitting for this theme. Without the bird, maybe....

Gosh, I adore Herons! This is a wonderful shot.

I don't find this very relevant.

I think this is an excellent interpretation of the theme. However, the bird, as the subject, just *has to be* sharp in this case. It is not as if the bird is moving swiftly (it doesn't appear to be) and the blur of motion in the head doesn't seem to add anything important to the photograph, IMHO.

To Dan's excellent points. If the surface of the water in the background were smooth, featureless, and assuming that the reeds and the reflection of the reeds are as much a part of the subject as the bird, then simply subtracting the water (the negative space) would leave the bird, the rushes and the reflection perfectly identifiable as what they are, which is a good definition of negative space, in my book.

King, I know, I'm sorry about the blurry bird!! I almost didn't post it for that reason. It was dusk when I shot this and I bumped the exposure value up +2 which ended up requiring a 15 second exposure (15 sec, F/8, EV +2, ISO-100, 200 mm on a Rebel XT). I definitely could have done myself a favor by leaving the exposure value at 0, but unfortunately I didn't, and soon enough the bird was gone. I do personally think it ruins the picture, but this photo was so close to what I was going for and I liked it, so I went ahead and posted it anyway hoping the blurred head wouldn't be too awful.
Glad you liked my interpretation of negative space!

luminouslens,
I post what I want to post and make no apologies. Simple as that.
I'm happy to see what you like. It's that kind of sharing that adds meaning to WS.

I like this composition. The blurred water really provides nice negative space between the bird and the grass. Wish the darn bird would have held still though. That might have gotten you 5's from me.
