Did you know that if your subject is much smaller than the lens diameter (let's say the head of an ant) and you shoot wide open that you will see around both sides of the ant at the same time? As you stop down to an aperture closer to the size of the ant's head, the parts of the head (top, sides and bottom) that you see with the lens wide open will gradually and simply disappear.
