I see you had 13 ratings and no ratings so figured I'd offer one. This youngster, sad as he is, is very cute. The image definately conveys that concept and perhaps the concept of being confined but it doesn't really convey the theme to me of "looking through" something. To me I feel like I am looking directly at the subject and not through the bars at him. Also I think in terms of technique a catch light in the eyes from some fill would have helped immensely. As it is now the eyes are in deep shadow and don't show any clarity or life. With better detail in the eyes it would feel less like a snapshot. Sorry if this comes across as being harsh but I wanted to offer you some insight.
