Neat idea, and I love the door. I wish the 'other side' had something a bit more exciting. Is that a pool?

Great on the shadow details here. Nice

Ana and Craig: I agree. It's a rather minimalist shot. Not for all tastes. And yes, it's a swimming pool in a (now closed) hotel in LA.

Great colours framed nicely in that window. A square crop of the door and right hand banister could massively improve the composition - I really think you have missed the opportunity for a stunning shot there.

Duncan, I don't have the feeling I have missed anything, as long as I can do something to improve the shot. I'll take your advice and give it a try. On the other hand, I like the symetry of the composition as it is...

I'm still wondering how people rate images. I don't mean all my pictures should be featured, and I admit most featured pictures deserve it.
All I can do is this little game: How would I honestly rate this image if it was not mine? I suppose, of course, we are in honest and sincere company.
It seems it is relevant enough, but I wouldn't give the highest mark, though. A 4 seems reasonable.
The biggest problem is the lack of impact, so I'll give a 2 for impact. (A one may be a bit harsh?)
I think the composition is ok, but Duncan doesn't. Doesn't it mean it is below average? So I'll give it a 3.
Here comes the tricky part: is there anything wrong technically? The conditions of light are not easy. Is there a lack of details in the shadows? is there any visible noise? Is it underexposed or overexposed? I don't think so. Now: do I want to give a chance to this image to get featured? In that case, I'll rate technique and quality (not much difference to me) with a 4. If not, I'll rate 3 (which is not really honest anymore, or is it?).If the first case, I end up with a 3.4, in the second, 3.
So explain me please how I end up with a 2.7?

Straight 5's. My favorite thing is how the distorted line in the pool is echoed in the blue of the two railings. Perfect!

So how did my 5's affect your score. Sometimes I'll have seven or eight comments that say my image is great, so I figure that they gave me fours and fives, but like you, after 13 ratings, I'll have a 2.5 or something, which means someone must be going through giving zeros or something. It is frustrating, as is anything anonymous. I know there are drawbacks to attaching names, but if someone said, I think the quality here is 1 out of five, I could at least ask him/her why.
But, again, the main pleasure is thinking about what to submit, and then seeing the thoughtful comments from people like you, Arne, Ana, Craig, King, and countless others. So, stick with it.

Relevant, but not much impact for me.
