Where I come from, "chick" is the preferred reference to females, indicating respect, esteem and admiration.

Chick is derived from chiquita, Spanish for girl...not chicken, you silly goose. By extension, men would be called hombres. I prefer "dude" or "your highness" but hombre would work, too.
