Great idea! not sure why you chose such a stark/bright background for this shot, but it's very relevant.

There were a lot of distracting things in the background that were messing up the focus of the shot. I hung a white sheet from the fan above the stack of books to get them out of the shot. The light is coming directly above, from the ceiling fan fixture, as well as another lamp in front.

So, the white was partially by accident, but I liked it enough to dodge out the bit of shadows that remained. I just found they didn't lend anything to the image.

might have had greater impact if the books would go on at the bottom, at least I think theres a table there in the lower right corner!...
