I like the image, but not the subject. Just personal preference about shooting a object like this to portray joy.

Overall, I can understand why you selected Sponge Bob as a representation of "Joy", although I sort of see him as more manic than joyful. I am not sure what I should "get" from the soft, diffuse focus? If you read this, please let us know. I like it, but I am not sure if it is a help to the concept of Joy or a hinderance.

this is cool, pinhole?

outofcontxt said 807 days ago:

This was part of a continuing series called Pez Army. It was shot with one of my homebrew lenses attached to an obscure former Iron Curtain medium format SLR. Hence the diffuse glow due to the fact that the lens is a crappy loupe. Just an experiment as I like to push the envelope with my photos. Like Keith Carter, I believe that sharpness is overrated. :)

When is Sponge Bob not happy? ;) The colors compliment each other very well. The soft focus generate a warm "just out of the tub" feel. Not feeling joy but more of a sleepy relaxed state.

This may not be very constructive, but I always found SpongeBob to be somewhat creepy. Especially in this surreal shot!

Outofcontxt:

In your comment you talk about a "homebrew lens"... would you be willing to elaborate? Is this a lens you made?

outofcontxt said 807 days ago:

Lange, it's a lens I cobbled together using (in this case) a loupe, garbage bag and extension tube. It's essentially a crappy shift/tilt lens. Most of what I learned I got from the following site:

http://www.mkaz.com/photo/tools/homemadelens.html

The rest was a lot of trial, error and experimentation since I use medium format exclusively for this kind of stuff.

I actually find it a little freaky, but I can see the idea.
