... and you know, I really struggled with myself as to whether or not to put it in. As you can see it's there, but I added it for the perspective. Those balloons were SO high up ... the ones in the main shot are the tiny cluster you see at the top of the inset. Anyway, thanks for the comment, ... a valid criticism. :)

I really like how the thumbnail works with the full size picture. The composition, colour and quality is excellent. It is not a particularly striking image, but it's well on target for a "joy" theme.

It's probably just me but a long strand of ballons like this make me think of car lots advertising big sales instead of joy.

and Michelle, you'd be absolutely right! ... That's exactly where they were, and the sight of those balloons high up in a beautiful blue sky made me forget all about those yucky cars, and I just smiled ... and felt "joyful".

I think I would've rated this higher if the inset picture wasn't there...it detracts from the main image.

The colors and inset photo drew me to this one. But I just don't see the relevance other than perhaps these balloons are associated with some sort of celebration like a birthday party which I guess would be "joyful". Around here in Southern California something like this is even more likely to be associated with a car dealership sales blowout or new home tract grand opening. So it doesn't immediately hit me. Sorry.

I really like this concept, and I love how dark and saturated the image is. I think you've done a very nice job at showing joy without stamping it on someone's face.
I'm not sure I get the point of the embedded image though.

I am divided on this one. I enjoy the bigger image immensely and to me it does evoke a joyful response. However, at least for me, the insert, sort of a picture-in-a-picture arrangement, detracts from the "JOY" aspect of the image and instead makes it seem either a) journalistic or b)tutorial. So, while I think the picuture is great, I would suggest removing the insert to better suggest the "Joy" theme.

I really think this image could do without the little inset on the bottom-left. I find it very distracting and it fills up some negative space that would otherwise be really nice compositionally.
