Ideally you could have had a hand holding the cards, then you should have imitated a poker game (there is no Joker in poker) so have the guy holding the cards have a good hand, like a full-house every card is needed therefor attention will be on the full set!
Darken down the whole scene maybe have some blurry people in the background, (smoke), some money, and then do it black and white!
scene 2
a green felt surface, everything in focus (DOF) some poker chips, a good hand maybe even a royal straight flush (to be cheesy) everything highly saturated, but not overdone...
This would take time but that just came into my head when I saw this shot...

I just layed some cards on the table and took about fifty shots,sorted through them,
and put up the cleanest one.

I get the feeling that I'm being teased in a clever way by a clever person. I'd have preferred five aces.
This shot has some potential. If you knew a bit about lighting, just stuff around the house, you could turn this into a rather dramatic photo. Want me to show you?

Heh, as I'm sure others have said, this was a stretch on the theme. But it still works, and i'll give you points for creativity. The shot's quality looks like it was shot in 1976. sweet.
