One of the main things I didn't like, is the fact the tower wasn't totally in focus.

I'd appreciate any help in how I'd do so next time - It was almost pitch black, so I couldn't see anything to focus it..

If you can't see anything at all and your subject is far enough away, you might want to try setting your focus to infinity. I've done that several times while night shooting distant objects and most of the time it turns out pretty well.

I usually take a torch, if the subject is too far away to light with a torch and get focus that way (then turning the torch off for the shot of course) I go to infinity then dial it back just a little. I don't know why I do that though.
