this is a great find, and I love the way that corner is lit. what kind of surface is that??
flipthom said 205 days ago:
Thank you both for your comments. The surface is piece of metal that I found laying around. I picked it up, yawned, scratched my head, grabbed a knife, and carved the numeral into it. A bit anti-climactic, I know but that's the story. Who knows? Maybe I'll even get 13 ratings out of it!

Nice one.

I wonder what is it the number 4? Excellent Impact and background. Love it.
Flatline said 204 days ago:
It's hard to rate this because I have no context. Is this etched on glass by vandals using a key? IS this chalk on a blackboard? Is it on the floor? Because of that I don't know if there could have been better composition, or whether this was best technique.

Ah, I see.

Just out scratching around?? Nice find, if you found it, nice job scratching if you didn't. This has a great feel to it, good job capturing the texture and feels of this.

Thanks Beamer! Yep, was out scratching around :)
And Flatline, thanks for the comment. I really do feel that this was the best composition. Even if I had shown the entire background, it wouldn't have given much by way of context. The piece of metal was standard business card size with rounded corners....very uninteresting. I was holding it with one hand, shooting with the other. I was experimenting with the natural light flooding in through the window, and I was trying to get the reflections just right so that they illuminated the scratches.
Thanks again for the comments and critiques.

I didnt like this as a thumb, but Im pleasantly suprised by it. Good texture in the background, and the over-iterated 4, makes me think irrate teacher/gun totting student

Thanks for the explanation Flip, its good to see someone responding to questions/comments. I thought chalkboard and chalk, not metal and scratching

There is something about this that I really like.

very stark and captivating!! nice photo.. was this created for the theme?
high marks
pete said 204 days ago:
yay for flip... hope this gets featured!!
flipthom said 204 days ago:
@ Stolenlife - You're welcome for the responses. In a perfect world, there would be more dialogue like this on all the shots. Maybe 08 will be more perfect in that regard.
@Hummingbird - Thank you :)
& Thanks Pete!
It's pretty close. I may see if Shipmate or Bogart can boost my score ; )

LOOOOL!!
Flatline said 203 days ago:
I would have assumed it was a much larger object... something to be said for context after all. Good effort for creating a shot!
Flatline said 203 days ago:
Hardcore would have been a new way of working: this is a white wall, with etching directly onto the sensor.

This is interesting. I wonder what it is.
