I want to meet this man. ... or the photo makes me think I do. Really nicely done.

An interesting picture - however the background and softness is distracting

Interesting character. I'm confused by the people in the background, they distract from the subject. He's a pretty tough-looking guy (strong body, steel jewelry, big cigar) but the people in the background come across like spectating tourists.

Thanks for your comments. I completely agree about the background. This was taken at Preakness with a little Powershot S30, which really can't do much by way of background blur. I tried to blur it a bit in Photoshop, but didn't want it to look too fake (no real bokeh, hard to isolate the main figure well, etc.). But I completely agree that this would be much more dramatic if the background people were really not part of the image.

The subject is certainly dramatic, but something's missing. The background is really distracting and the colors a little dull. Eye contact would have been nice, but I reckon you were trying to be discreet.

though i like the backlight, and cool effect of the light through the smoke, i think you need to light his face up some more. he is getting lost in the shadow.

Nice capture, I can almost smell that cigar. It does feel a little soft to me though, and I may have cropped the sides (especially the left) in just a tad, or gave it a vignette to keep those folks in the background from distracting...
