The angle that this was taken (slightly below the figure) somehow makes it for me - its like it is a candid shot and then maybe not. The b/w tones in the face are perfect along with the light in his eyes.

Thanks. This is one of my 3 boys, my middle son. He is almost 16.

It is a candid (at least somewhat) in that I planned it and he didn't. But that is usually the only way for me to get them, since they usually run in the other direction from the camera. (Portraits are also not in my comfort zone, at least not yet.)

He was practicing piano, and turned around to ask me a question. I was sitting on the floor and the cat was sitting next to him on the piano bench. I pretended to be taking shots of the cat. He turned to ask me a question, and I caught him. It was a great gotcha moment! (It doesn't take much to make me happy...lol.)

When I read the guidelines for the theme, I thought the drama was to catch the person's character.

This is a candid shot that I think captures his gregarious, mischievous, bit of a know it all, side quite well.

He is perpetually happy, extremely knowledgeable (like a walking encyclopedia), and has a very mischievous side, which I thought was visible in his eyes and his smile.

But since people here don't know him, I can understand that may not be easy to discern.

This is a very good portrait. The only thing I find disturbing here is being able to see the saliva in his mouth.
