To me this seems more like a candid than a portrait

kikko77 said 817 days ago:

why? and what's the difference?

shotage said 815 days ago:

I think this image is relevant (although I'm struggling with this category).

I think it's a good picture, but I feel that the black and white conversion is a little flat. No offence intended. I usually add some grain to black and white images and play with the curves and levels to help add depth top an image. Also, there are many method for converting to b&w and they which one works best very much depends on the image, I find. Have you tried using the 'channel mixer' in ps, I find by clicking the monochrome button and playing with the colour channels to achieve the right contrast and depth but usually amounting to 100%. Hope that makes sense in is of any help.

Apologies for my terrible spelling and grammar in my comment. I'm not normally THAT bad.

shotage said 815 days ago:

Oh also, on the candid front, a candid dramatic portrait is surely acceptable? I don't understand ArneG's comment.

Thanks for your comment, Andy.
Yes, it is flat. The one I posted to my pblog is a bit better...added some contrast to it.
Yes, I have tried ch.mixer, and sometimes use it. My problem is that having a compact camera (Panasonic FZ5) with lots of noise, I am quite limited when pulling the sliders for R, G and B. I usually use a color filter (for this photo I used light red) and a hue/saturation layer above that to desaturate the image.
I will certainly try adding some grain to the shot. Thanks again.

I don't know the original image, but I wonder if this might have been even stronger in color. The B+W isn't bad, but it doesn't add much here. Technically the shot is fine - good DOF, good light-metering, good contrast.
