I really like this image. It's probably my favorite on a number of levels. I do think it's unfortunate that lighting didn't illuminate their faces more. As it is the vibrant background pops out more making the image a little uneven. I wonder if it would work better in black and white. A great photo.

i immediately want to know who they are, what their lives are like etc. (a sign of a good photo imo) where was this taken?

Lorissa, this pic has been taken many years ago, exactly 25, in Zaire, a country of center of Africa; it is presently called Democratic Republic of Congo. In particular the region is in the deep south of such country; the Shaba; close to the border with Tanzania. I remember that I given them a couple of dollars each getting them very happy at least for a week.

Well, then these boys had most definitely seen things far beyond their years and sadly, by now, I wonder if they are still alive considering the "activity" within the Congo.
