I'll start by saying that I really like this shot. The subject is great, the lighting is perfect. My suggestion comes more in the way of a question: By showing the legs/cane, do you feel you gained more than the detail you lost in face by framing a bit closer and higher?

I don't know the answer... but from what I can see of the face I can't help but wonder if a different composition might have been even better!

uh.. well, i suppose this is an 'environmental' portrait... just trying to achieve some kind of context and i found her 'bowed' legs an important aspect - i guess she always sat as the japanese do without chairs and that has probably attributed to the 'condition'. the cane is also part of the women as while i was photographing her, she kept dropping it - most likely in a bid to gain sympathy.... because as i learned later; she's a bit of a con-artist... very sweet tho'.

and i guess a tight crop with all those wrinkles would've been a pretty easy and cheap shot with no context.

This has soooo much potential. Older folks with the craggy faces are soo cool to photograph - I prefer a portrait to be more in the head and shoulders region - but that is my personal view.

this is a fantastic portrait. i like the feeling of a candid snap, but there is so much information about the subject just in what shes wearing, standing, looking. just great.

oh, and i just love all the patterns in the shot. the jacket, tile, purse. it all comes together to really tell more about the subject. and im really happy you did NOT crop this to head and shoulders. you would have lost so much. this is wonderful!
