Very nice take. Bravo on the sharp focus and great depth of field too.

Perfect!

oh yes. love this. the background faint blue is wonderful against the bird and its colors. image quality seems a tad off to my eye (something to do with sharpening), but a lovely shot nonetheless.

Beautiful creature and a lovely curvacious figure!

No ugly duckling here. I love the gorgeous and subtle earth tones, both in the bird's head and feathers and in the background bokeh. I only wish that the bird's neck was arched a bit more so his beak would point downward and draw the eye around the image, rather than outward.
Good work.

Thanks for the comments and input, everyone!

George: Reading your comment I assumed I had over sharpened without reviewing the results critically enough before uploading. But looking back at the image now, I don't see to what you are referring. (Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put!)

King: I spent half an hour or forty-five minutes with this heron years ago, when I was first getting interested in photograph beyond point and shoot. Made many images with a variety of compositions. Unfortunately, although very cooperative in terms of allowing me to get close and holding still (this is uncropped from an iso 100 slide exposed in low light), it never pointed its beak down. I guess it just doesn't appreciate the finer points of composition.

@mitchh
I hope I didn't imply that you should have *caused* the heron to lower his beak. It was just wishful thinking. Every photograph a baby?

Congratulations on shooting slides. Why don't you tell folks what those are?

Extra credit for the Churchhill quote.

I'm glad this finally got featured. It was one of my favorites this week.

George said 575 days ago:

Mitch, clearly this bird is of the genera Heron unsharpenedus ;-) Congrats on the feature of a terrific shot!

Thanks again for everyone's input and ratings!

King: I took your comments as intended, and can certainly relate wishful thinking (see my comments regarding Kevin Hughes' featured image in this theme). There is certainly an element of serendipity in nature photography.
