Good on the theme. I fell sad when I see people eating alone in a restaurant like this. I'm not sure why since I have had to dine alone on occasion when I'm out on my own for work. I always imagine they are alone for some sad reason.

He's alone, but since he's actively eating, it doesn't give off an isolated feeling. Great shot, though. Other than the left side, which I might have cropped that thing that's on the floor? Love how massive that empty chair looks.

Excellent.

I like this shot. The contrast and colour (or lack of it) really give a nice feel. It must be quite lonely being an old person. Perhaps the only problem is that the old man isn't very clear because he has his hand up to his face.

@Ana: He's a old teacher that live alone, no one wait for him at home and prepare a warm meal. Every day he goes to the restaurant, where he find a "special menu" at the lowest price possibile. You cannot see in the photo, but his pants are tattered, and his shoes are open in the front. It's a sad story, i think he is really "alone".

@davedupplaw: i know that the hand is over the face, but itsn't a shot taken in studio set, where you can control all the aspect of the photo. This kind of shots are "as is".
Thanks to all for the comments!!
Weekly Shot, i love you! It's a great place to talk over photography.

This is awesome. Very relevant, and sort of sad too. I always get a little depressed when I see people eating alone in restaurants.
On the other hand, I am often the guy eating alone in a restaurant, and I have a wife, kids, and a dog that I go home to every day. So maybe it isn't always as depressing as you might initially think ;)

Excellent photo, Giancarlo. I agree with Ana that the shot may benefit from a little tighter cropping on the left.
And, hey, I *like* to eat alone, especially if I have a good book and a good meal and plenty of time.

I have been browsing the shots in this theme...this one is super! (or should I say "souper?") But really, after scrolling though all these pictures this one really caught my attention because it carries such a powerful sense of humanity and the frailty of old age. I agree that the image could be improved with a tighter crop to the left, and it is probably worth the effort to do that!

This image tell such a compelling story. Regardless of whether others are in the restaurant, he has a wife and kids, we all feel alone, sometimes even in a crowd or when we are with a spouse. For me this image conveys 'alone' and is very well done.

I think that eating alone in a restaurant, at a table with a tablecloth and an empty chair (not just at the counter in a diner) is pretty alone... I think this says it more than many of the featured photos this week. I like the hand where it is, it shows the action of the scene.

This could have been taken at any point in the last 50 years. I like that sense of timelessness
