Good interpretation. I can't decide if this is staged or candid though, and that's bothering me.

The thought also crossed my mind: is it staged? But then I figured, so what if it is? It's still powerful for the statement this fact which affects many people makes. And looking at it longer, I just don't think it's staged.

I was almost offended when people suggested this was staged. Then again, if they visited my site, they would know this is one of many photos I've taken of homeless people in NYC and Toronto.

shrued, I can understand your reaction to being almost offended, but I would take it as a "compliment," so to speak. What I think it means is:

a) many people never come into contact with what is depicted here
b) even if they do they would never consider photographing it for fear, or revulsion, or guilt, or...
c) therefore because it takes a lot of courage to make this image (for the reasons outline above), people might think it's staged.

So as I see it, it's a testament to your photojournalistic intention and ability.

I hope to see it featured. And I wonder what it says in the heart?
