I love the mix of traditional and modern, and the mixture of cultures (the necklace vs. the ritual face paint). I believe this is face paint worn by certain tribes when boys go through their initiation into manhood? Is this such a case?

thanks! In reply to Lorissa, this was taken in S.Africa hence the strong tribal influence. Your point about the progression from boy to man is interesting. No idea what the necklace is about!

Ahh, then no wonder this looks so familiar to me. I'm from S.Africa:) Many tribes (the Xhosa and Zulu for example) follow a ritual whereby young boys are painted in this fashion, circumcised and sent into the veld (the bush) for 3 days. This is their "journey into manhood". Sorry, don't mean to ramble here, but I do love how you've captured a young man at such a time following an ancient ritual but obviously also a "modern" boy.
