I did decide to make a statement this morning on the Absence of comments recently on WS.

I shot this, edited this in PS, speed rated 13 images and posted this, all in @10 minutes.

As I said in a earlier post to the last Theme, I HAD been trying to rate and comment on every submission for that week. I probably was running at @90%+, but this week, well...Bah, Humbug!!

An absence of comments - quite frankly this argument and complaint is very old. One comment from the right person, be that someone who's own work you admire or someones opinion that you value, is worth so much more than 12 useless 'nice shot' comments. Constructive criticism is usually not received that well by people who just want comments, or they prefer argue points to death rather than learning from what someone else has to say... I have been refraining from posting in this theme, instead I have been looking, rating and commenting solely as an exercise and to see if it really is worth while continuing to participate here. I just don't know.

Sorry for the rant on your image but comments really aren't worth that much if they always the same and not thought out.

I always love comment discussions - theres one on the group at the mo, well worth joining in as always. I can be quite hardline on comments - I like them, and see it as an integral part of playing here every week. mtmartini is right in one way at least - if all the comment is going to say is 'cool' then it may as well not be said. On the other hand, my understanding is that comments are there to explain your rating.
Its a shame when people are unable to take constructive criticism, or even others opinions, day to day life must be very difficult for these people. Its important to remember this is just a GAME. Its not the _winning_ - its the taking part

Anyway get over to the group and help to decide the next phase of weeklyshot. Do you want less rating before posting.

Leaving a comment that says, "I really like this" or "nice shot" is very meaningful. It might not be helpful, but it accomplishes two things.
1, it tells the photographer who is rating their shot, and 2, it tells the photographer that the person rating their shot is a participant, not just someone that rates, posts and waits.

The idea that you get anywhere from 13 - 17 people rating your image so they can post their own images, but on 2 or 3 take the time to comment is frustrating to some of us. I both value the comments(longer that 3 words, i.e. well thought out and meaningful), and I value commenting. I feel I learn from both. Lots of other opinions expressed above, most of which I respect.
