If you want to find out what this place is all about, look no further. This site was designed around the following concepts.
Not everyone will get featured on the homepage. Keeping this fact in mind, we want to make the entire process valuable for you by actively encouraging our users to provide open, honest, and respectful critiques.
Any number of people can be featured on the homepage photoblog. If we get a lot of great photos, then we feature them.
We purposefully don't publish each photo's rating score for all to see. Only the photographers themselves can see their own scores. We also purposefully avoid sorting photos in order of highest score to lowest score. Often times these types of comparisons don't make sense, so we don't encourage them.
We make no effort to define the proper, objective way to rate an image. We encourage raters to score images based on their own personal tastes. Some people are very strict and rigorous in the way they rate photos and other people are happy to use their gut to make decisions. We think both methods have merit. Our theory is that if we get enough ratings from enough users, then it all just evens out in the end.
Power to the people! Weekly Shot is an experiment in democratic photo editing and self-moderation. Our goal is to design a system that allows you to determine what you want and what you don't want.
Photos are rated and featured on the homepage in real time. This means the site is regularly updated with fresh content (not just once a week.)
When you rate photos, you don't know who the photographer is and you are also not presented with an image title. This makes for a much more unbiased rating process. Images won't be featured just because of name recognition. Because of this, we ask users not to add your name or other identifying marks to your images.
If you're featured on the homepage, we want everyone to know who you are. Whenever we get the chance, we provide a link back to your website. We also provide copyright notices wherever possible.
You can subscribe to our RSS feed to see the most recently featured photos. We'll also send you email alerts whenever someone comments on one of your photos or whenever one of your photos makes it to the homepage.
You don't need your own website to participate. We host the images. (But if you do have a website, all your images have links back to your site.)
Last but not least, it's important to realize that this is just a website! :) It's not a life and death situation. If someone doesn't like your photo, it's okay. Since we encourage honest feedback, you will certainly see some comments that you disagree with. It's up to you to figure out how to respond. We suggest that you try to be civil, lighthearted, and respectful.... and most of all try to learn from each other and have fun. In the end that's really what it's all about, isn't it?
